Pimple/mass
Q: My fiance and i have a 7 1/2 month old english springer spaniel. i have a habit of massaging our puppy. one day i felt what seemed to be a little pimple on his left upper chest. within one to two weeks, this little pimple grew the size of a pea or little larger, looked pinkish or reddish in color. it was also hard, nonmoveable. it felt like it was on his skin, but hard to say. we took him to the vet, which the same day, he had emergency surgery, which we are waiting for the results of the biopsy at this time. the vet informed us that if we let it go, the mass could get bigger and start to bleed, which would be hard to stop the bleeding. i am afraid it may be cancerous, even thou he seems to be doing fine....his incision is about 3 or 4 inches long. it is a pretty big size with several sutures. the vet also informed us that if it is cancer, it can spread thru his body. can this be a hemangioma? are springers accessible to tumors? cancer? can you give me a little more information? i've been searching thru all kinds of animal books we have since having 3 different types of dogs..and none on english spring spaniels. in the meantime, we're still waiting for the results which will hopefully be this week. thank you so much. linda
A: I would wait until you get biopsy back any day before i can comment or make recommendations. i can only tell you that in my experience most of these growths in young dogs are benign histiocytomas, which are very common, and actually sometimes can go down on their own. if that is what it ends up being, then you were alarmed needlessly

Preventing ticks
Q: I have a six month old golden retriever. she has a dog door so she is free to go outside all day long. she only had 1 or 2 ticks all winter, but since it been warmer the past week, she's become infested with ticks. please recomend the most effective solution to my problem. thank you joel herrera
A: You should consider k9 advantix applied monthly, and possibly a preventic collar.
Shop for: tick, preventic collar, advantix

Heartgard plus
Q: My dog uses the heartgard brown but i noticed you have a heartgard plus what is the difference?
A: "brown" refers to the strength of the product. heartgard and heartgard plus have the same ingredient to prevent heartworms but the "plus" adds on protection against intestinal worms, the round & hookworms.|you can get information on these products on our website.
Shop for: heartgard, heartgard plus

Medication
Q: Hello, my cat patty has been given clavomox for her urinary infection. she will not take the pills. we had to resort to giving her really small food portions to get her to take her meds and she has lost weight. we tried to force it down her throat but she threw it up. we tried the liquid but she spit that up too. what can i do? can i give her regular penicillin is small doeses? if so, how many milligrams can she have? she weighs about 11 pounds now. she was over 13. thanks for your advice.
A: With an order from your veterinarian, we can prepare a tuna flavored liquid in our compounding facility.

Foot odor
Q: Hi, my dog sadie who is a chocolate lab, has a strong foot odor. my vet has check her feet, but found no fungus. is there a topical foot cream available to maybe rid of the odor. thanks sincerely julie
A: I recommend swabbing the foot web and examining the material under high power for an organism called malassezia. it is very common but sometimes hard to find. i treat it with ketoconazole.

Zentonil 200
Q: The vet placed my dog on zentonil, does pedmeds carry it or an equivelant? thank you
A: Sorry we do not stock zentonil.

I live in ma
Q: I live in ma and we have lots of dogs in the neighborhood and i am not sure if any of them are on heartworm preventative medicine. i was wondering if you recommend my cat who is in and out 50/50 to be on it? thanks
A: I would hope that the dogs in your community are on heartworm preventative. if your cat is out of the house a lot, i would discuss heartworm prevention with your veterinarian.

Which is best for a tiny dog?
Q: I just aquired a 3 yr. old yorkie/llhasa mix. (girl). her owner passed away and she was left in my care. she has been very well taken care of as far as vet care and immunizations. i do think she has worms and also needs flea and tick meds. what would you reccommend for my new dog.? she only weighs about 3 lbs. very tiny. thank you, kathie kiter
A: I would use monthly interceptor or heartgard which will prevent most intestinal worms and of course heartworms. as for flea/tick meds be very careful with topical products on such a little dog as they can react, you may want to try oral program.
