Pet with seizure disorder
Q: My beloved rottweiler has had seizures for two years. the dog suddenly developed these symtoms. during two aggressive and violent arguments my un-neutered pet became aggressive and attacked my husband who was threating me, i was bitten trying to stop my pet from biting my husband then 17 days later my dog attacked my daughter after she became violent with me again. i was bitten during the incident my daughter was not. my question is has the dog suffered brain damage from his seizures and is going to have to be put to sleep. the dog has never attacked or harmed anyone prior to these two occasions. he felt i was being threatened. does the dog have any chance of his behavior being stopped if he was neutered and the mitigating circumstances violent arguments being stopped of returning to his normal behavior or should the dog be put down?he is normally very protective of me my daughter and my husband. has the dog just become blood thirsty or was he acting in a normal fashion. after the attacks he is his old self again demure nad he seems to know that he has done something wrong. my real question is can this type of behavior be excpected from him from now on out?would he be a candidate for a rottweiler rescue program? will this dog attack again for no reason or can extra precautions be takes to prevent the dog from biting
A: Tough one to give definitive advice on. i would see vet specialist in behavior for best chance at combination of behavior mdoficiation as well as possible drug therapies. some of these dogs need to be put to sleep howeever due to unpredictaablity

Choosing low cost alternatives
Q: Hi, i'm on a fixed income and need to cut expenses. is it ok to switch from sentinel to iverhart for heartworm prevention? is it ok to switch from frontline to proticall for flea & tick prevention? also, my dog won't take the heartworm med without it being hidden in peanut butter or cream cheese but she swallows the heartworm tab whole. is it less effective when administered that way? should i crush tab first? thanks!
A: Iverhart is an option. however, this medication is not equivalent to sentinel in that it will not protect against fleas or whipworm. you can use proticall instead of frontline. swallowing the tablet whole should not make any change in effectiveness.
Shop for: frontline, sentinel, tick

Feeding and vitamins
Q: A litter of kittens have found there way in my heart, as well as my home. there are four of them and they seem to have lost there mother they look very young they do have teeth but are very tiny too small to eat yet so i took them in and fed them my 4 month olds baby milk? is that okay ? how can i tell how old they are ? one of them follows me around they are less then a pound each and are as small as my hand , well i concerned if the formula is okay for them and should i give them any supplements other than the milk and is there anything special i need to do to take care of them . someone told me they wouldnt go to the bathroom on there on they had to simulated to go by there mother! is that true. i am going to take them to the vet but that take s time and money and at the moment i do not have alot of it. i order from pet meds all the time and they are great but they didnt seem to know very much about young kittens if you can give me any info on what to do it would be so helpfull i love my pets i spend alot of money at petmeds i put flea meds on my dogs and on my sisters dogs but if you could help me out her i would be so greatfull. anything i should know to properly treat them would be usefull donna
A: I cant address all questions in brief space here. you need to have vet go over with you in office and show you directly with kittens how to stimulate bowel movements, etc. i cant tell you old they are without seeing them. baby milk is not best thing for them. i would get some sort of feline milk replacer such as kmar which you can get at local pet store and bottle feed them every few hours as much as they will take until can have vet visit.

Redness
Q: I have an 8 month old american bulldog/boxer mix that has slowly developed a redness under the hair on his back (he has white hair and it appears to be a red line on his back. i don't have the money for an immediate vet visit, and he doesn't seem to be terribly bothered by it, but i want to resolve this before it does become a problem. what would the signs be of mange? how would i determine if this was mange or an allergy? thank you for your help here.
A: I doubt mange which usually does not appear this way. only way to diagnose it though is skin scrape at vet. more likely an allergy

Revolution and worms
Q: Do i need to use a wormer with revolution to prevent round worms and hook worms? i know that revolution prevents heartworms but what about the other types of worms?
A: Revolution will kill and control worms in cats, but is not effective in dogs. if you suspect worms in dogs you will need to purchase a specific wormer.
Shop for: revolution

Ear mites
Q: I have a 5 year old 75 ld male dog, his right ear has a lot of dark brown build up and it has a very pungent odor, in the past my other dog had the same symptom. the vet diagnosed as ear mites. what can i use and can i order it thru petmed.
A: I would not be so quick to call 5 year old dog with dark brown wax in ear as ear mites as more common in this age to have overgrowth of yeast or bacteria. if you want, you coudl try mitaclear from 1800petmeds but i would certainly recommend vet exam of ear for best treatment. also see article i wrote on ear care on education part of this website
Shop for: ear mites, 1800petmeds

Ear infections
Q: My black lab chief has chronic ear infections my husband about every two weeks when it gets real bad cleans them and puts medicine in them. my question is could he take a pill that would actually clear up the infection. i believe he never gets rid of the actual infection. help (he's 4 years old and 115 lbs.) big dog.
A: Have him seen by your veterinarian.
