Irratable bowelQ: My cat just turned 10 years old she has had blood and mucus in her stool off and on since she was 5 years old. the vet puts her on metronidaz 50 mg. liquid form to control it. i would like to know if there is a diet that could help control her condition? she has been on select care neutral formular for 8 years. also can you tell me more about this condition and if it will get worse with age and if this medication is good to take as she gets older? A: This medicine is fine and safe for long term or intermittent use in cats. might want to consider low allergy natural diet like wellness brand low allergy diets that exist for cats or possibly california natural lamb and rice diet by natura brand as choices. also could consider home made diet as described in book the new natural cat by anitra frazier. inflammatory bowel disease is very common in cats and dogs. make sure complete cbc/chem and thyroid done as well as ultrasound done to make sure no other problems. many often eventually need oral prednisone if diet and metronidazole does not control

Pimple/massQ: My fiance and i have a 7 1/2 month old english springer spaniel. i have a habit of massaging our puppy. one day i felt what seemed to be a little pimple on his left upper chest. within one to two weeks, this little pimple grew the size of a pea or little larger, looked pinkish or reddish in color. it was also hard, nonmoveable. it felt like it was on his skin, but hard to say. we took him to the vet, which the same day, he had emergency surgery, which we are waiting for the results of the biopsy at this time. the vet informed us that if we let it go, the mass could get bigger and start to bleed, which would be hard to stop the bleeding. i am afraid it may be cancerous, even thou he seems to be doing fine....his incision is about 3 or 4 inches long. it is a pretty big size with several sutures. the vet also informed us that if it is cancer, it can spread thru his body. can this be a hemangioma? are springers accessible to tumors? cancer? can you give me a little more information? i've been searching thru all kinds of animal books we have since having 3 different types of dogs..and none on english spring spaniels. in the meantime, we're still waiting for the results which will hopefully be this week. thank you so much. linda A: I would wait until you get biopsy back any day before i can comment or make recommendations. i can only tell you that in my experience most of these growths in young dogs are benign histiocytomas, which are very common, and actually sometimes can go down on their own. if that is what it ends up being, then you were alarmed needlessly
Confused?Q: I have two kittens about 7 months old who just recently got neutered and declawed. they are both from indoor cats and from the same litter and are my only cats. one of the kitten's stool sample was tested during their recent vet visit and was negative. they said they only needed to test from one kitten because if it was positive it would show up in both kittens. then tonight, my kitten vomited (he ate dog food earlier so i'm not sure if thats what its from) and there were two (waht looked like) worms in the vomit. they looked like roundworms (long, whitish colored ones). if they were tested just a few weeks could it be possible they just recently got infected with the worms? if so, how? is it even worms at all? would it be too late if i called the vet on monday? today is sunday and they are closed. any help would be much appreciated! Revolution and wormsQ: Do i need to use a wormer with revolution to prevent round worms and hook worms? i know that revolution prevents heartworms but what about the other types of worms? A: Revolution will kill and control worms in cats, but is not effective in dogs. if you suspect worms in dogs you will need to purchase a specific wormer.
