Irratable bowel
Q: My cat just turned 10 years old she has had blood and mucus in her stool off and on since she was 5 years old. the vet puts her on metronidaz 50 mg. liquid form to control it. i would like to know if there is a diet that could help control her condition? she has been on select care neutral formular for 8 years. also can you tell me more about this condition and if it will get worse with age and if this medication is good to take as she gets older?
A: This medicine is fine and safe for long term or intermittent use in cats. might want to consider low allergy natural diet like wellness brand low allergy diets that exist for cats or possibly california natural lamb and rice diet by natura brand as choices. also could consider home made diet as described in book the new natural cat by anitra frazier. inflammatory bowel disease is very common in cats and dogs. make sure complete cbc/chem and thyroid done as well as ultrasound done to make sure no other problems. many often eventually need oral prednisone if diet and metronidazole does not control
Shop for: prednisone

Dog eating own stool
Q: My puppy is 7 months old and i have been catching him eat own stools when he messes in the house. he does not do it outside or to his brothers stool. how do i get him to stop?
A: Try using deter which should make the stool impalatable to him.

Medication
Q: Hello, my cat patty has been given clavomox for her urinary infection. she will not take the pills. we had to resort to giving her really small food portions to get her to take her meds and she has lost weight. we tried to force it down her throat but she threw it up. we tried the liquid but she spit that up too. what can i do? can i give her regular penicillin is small doeses? if so, how many milligrams can she have? she weighs about 11 pounds now. she was over 13. thanks for your advice.
A: With an order from your veterinarian, we can prepare a tuna flavored liquid in our compounding facility.

Parvo
Q: What are the symptoms of parvo ?
A: Vomit/diarrhea, loss of appetite, foul odor to vomit/diarrhea, which can be bloody, etc. not all present in every dog and usually mostly in puppies under one year.

Sick dog
Q: My shitszu went next door and ate some greens and becon. she is sick and vomiting blood what can i do for her?
A: Take her to vet for exam, etc. if not possible, then you coudl try 1/2 pepcid ac once daily. fast her for 24 hours, and then only offer small amounts of water during this time. then bland diet of boiled hamburger and rice and continue pepcid but really needs vet visit

Orbax
Q: My vet perscribed orbax along with otc pepcid for my dog. i just read that orbax should not be used in conjunction with antacids. should i be concerned?
A: The plain pepcid(not the pepcid complete) will not interact with the orbax. the second pepcid product contains an antacid to neutralize any acid in the stomach. the pepcid portion stops the production of acid. it is the alkaline nature of the antacid that reacts with the orbax.

G. shepherd puppies' first shots
Q: Please help, i have 10 5 weeks old puppies and i would like to do the shots or vaccinations myself. tell me please what vaccines i need to buy and please what about the schedule of those. can this be done with nonprescriptin medicines? a million thanks!
A: I don't like to overvaccinate dogs. i prefer only distemper/parvo in combination without all of the others. i give two shots one at 8 weeks and one again at 12 weeks followed by a rabies shot 1 month after last shot separately.
