Dry skinQ: Thank you for your assistance. my husband and i just purchased a female cocker spaniel before thanksgiving and she is now 5 months old and is scratching quite a bit. she is not bothered by fleas and we have already started her on frontline for puppies with our vet last month and she has received all her shots. q1. what could be causing her dry skin irritations and scratching? q2. what other nuturtional support or products can we use for dry skin? thank you. A: I suggest you have her checked by your veterinarian. there are many causes of itching in dogs. your veterinarian can determine the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.

Sick dogQ: My shitszu went next door and ate some greens and becon. she is sick and vomiting blood what can i do for her? A: Take her to vet for exam, etc. if not possible, then you coudl try 1/2 pepcid ac once daily. fast her for 24 hours, and then only offer small amounts of water during this time. then bland diet of boiled hamburger and rice and continue pepcid but really needs vet visit
My daughters dogQ: About 6 months ago my daughter brought home a mixed breed puppy that her friend gave her. about 3 months ago we noticed that the puppy had started scrathing all the time so we thought the puppy may have fleas so we gave her a bath with flea shampoo and put a flea collar on her. about a week or so after we noticed she started loosing her fur on either side of her stomach and there are little black dots on her skin and she still hasn't stopped scratching since. my daughter is convienced the puppy has cancer. what should we do for the poor thing, that wouldnt be to exspensive, money is an issue being a single mother of 4 but still wanting to give my kids the joy of having a puppy in our home. A: Have puppy checked for mange at your vet via skin scrape. if no mites then could be simply an allergy which would need allergy medicine to control
Sick puppyQ: I have a 8 month old, 3 lb chihuahua that has been sick since yesterday. she was administered with once a month wormer and squeeze on flea control. the flea control was (unknowingly at the time) for dogs over 33 pounds. we bathed the dog after about 1/2 hour.but she will not eat, drink, and just lies around.she had a very wet, somewhat hard bowel movement lastnight with a trace of blood in it.she has also vomited whenever she drinks water and it looks like human spit. she also gags, and you can hear her stomach gurgling, and she acts like her stomach is sore. she is also running a little fever. i do not have the money to take her to the vet, but i don't want her to die either. do you have any suggestions as to what may be wrong with my little doggie? thank you very much for any help you may give. A: You need to bring her to a veterinarian or veterinary emergency room immediately.
Which one?Q: We live in north carolina and have a golden retriever. right now we are using hartz flea and tick spray but it doesn't seem to be working. we want to get him on some other kind of treatment. he also needs something for heartworms. what do you think the best product would be? also, to use the heartworm medication does he need to be tested for heartworms first? thank you! A: If you golden is an outside dog we recommend the k9advantix. if mostly indoor, you can use frontline plus. |in response to your question about heartworm preventatives, most veterinarians would require a negative test first. you can then mail us the rx, or ask the office to fax or phone the rx in for you. you do have a choice where you have your prescriptions filled.

Cyst?Q: My dog is about 10 years old and has had problems with allergies from flea saliva. she has developed over the years a type of "cyst" about 1/4" large on her tail and another between her shoulders, i believe from areas where fleas have bit her. they are slowly getting larger. should we have them removed? are they anything to be concerned about? lisa ps: my dog is a maltese A: Tough for me to say since i would have to see them directly. many of these cysts are benign and i leave them alone as often they recur elsewhere so often i just monitor them as this will save you time and expense and putting dog through surgeries but should have direct vet visit to make sure cysts dont appear to be something more involved
