DiarrheaQ: I have a 4-year old labrador. each spring (usually around the month of may) he develops severe diarrhea - often a reddish/brown jellylike substance is mixed in with the stool. i notice this change in stool when i started giving him heartgard medication. do you have any alternative suggestions or another medication to recommend? he has been diagnosed with inflamatory bowel syndrome. i have been succeussful giving him nature's recipe - vegetarian formula and dick van patton's duck & potato formula dog foods. any help would be appreciated. thanks, cynthia champa A: If your dog has ibd, then he indeed could react to actually any of the monthly heartworm preventtives. you could try the other known as interceptor. if that no help you could even consider herbal alternatives like black walnut added to his food daily at dose of 1000 mg daily

Sick puppyQ: I have a 8 month old, 3 lb chihuahua that has been sick since yesterday. she was administered with once a month wormer and squeeze on flea control. the flea control was (unknowingly at the time) for dogs over 33 pounds. we bathed the dog after about 1/2 hour.but she will not eat, drink, and just lies around.she had a very wet, somewhat hard bowel movement lastnight with a trace of blood in it.she has also vomited whenever she drinks water and it looks like human spit. she also gags, and you can hear her stomach gurgling, and she acts like her stomach is sore. she is also running a little fever. i do not have the money to take her to the vet, but i don't want her to die either. do you have any suggestions as to what may be wrong with my little doggie? thank you very much for any help you may give. A: You need to bring her to a veterinarian or veterinary emergency room immediately.
Generic med vs. name brandQ: I have a 3 month old german shepherd and i am getting ready to start her on heart worm meds. i wanted to know which would be the best way to go? the cost is important in some ways, but if its better for my dog, i'll spend a little extra. also what's the best in flea and tick meds? thanks and best regards. A: You can save money by using iverhart plus which is the generic equivalent for heartgard plus.

Cushing disease & deramaxxQ: My 15 yr. old lab/pitbull mix has cushings disease. i wanted to try deramaxx for his arthritis. is there anything in the deramaxx that will harm him? A: Not really. just need to make sure you have liver/kidneys monitored periodically by your vet especially if he is on a drug to treat cushings like lysodren. also have to watch more closely for digestive side effects as dogs with cushings are more prone to stomach ulcers to begin with.

Sudden bad breathQ: My dog's breath has gotten really bad just recently...it's normally not great but recently has gotten really putrid, almost fishy. this has been consistent for almost a week so i don't think it's something he ate. i'm planning to take him to the vet soon for a check-up but is there anything that you know may be causing this in the mean time? A: Could be build up of tartar on teeth or gingivitis or oral infection. might need teeth cleaning and antibiotic therapy. take to vet when possible
Tried homeo-now whatQ: Yes, my dog has the worms that look like rice. i purchased the homeo drops from you and they haven't worked. what is the next strongest thing. i have a shih-tzu that weighs 13 pounds. A: You will need to buy panacur c. order enough to repeat the treatment two to three weeks after the first time.
