Cushing disease & deramaxx
Q: My 15 yr. old lab/pitbull mix has cushings disease. i wanted to try deramaxx for his arthritis. is there anything in the deramaxx that will harm him?
A: Not really. just need to make sure you have liver/kidneys monitored periodically by your vet especially if he is on a drug to treat cushings like lysodren. also have to watch more closely for digestive side effects as dogs with cushings are more prone to stomach ulcers to begin with.
Shop for: deramaxx

Using advantix & revolution
Q: Hi, i have a 6 month old basset hound who has been on ivomec, 1 shot every 2 weeks for the treatment of sarcoptic mange. she is doing much better; however, during her last visit, she had a tick attached under her neck. my husband had one also on his leg when he and the basset came home from a walk. my vet administered advantix for my basset. i also ordered revolution at her (my vet) recommendation. my question is, can i use both medications at the same time, or should i wait a month? my vet said its o.k., and if i start my dog on the revolution, she would not need one more shot of the ivomec. (the vet suggested 3 shots every 2 weeks) please advise. i have had a bad experience with one vet at banfield already and now i'm so paranoid that they don't know what they're doing. i had dachshund that i adopted from the local pound and had the sarcoptic mange. (although i did not know it at the time) even when my basset began to develop the same symptoms, the vet kept insisting it was allergies and just kept pumping us for money. finally, she said there was nothing else that could be done and my dachshund was put down. i took my basset to another banfield and was diagnosed with the mange. so as you can see, as a first time pet owner, i'm getting off to a bad start. thank you, araceli
A: Since revolution will also protect against fleas and ticks, using k-9 advantix may be using too much medication. i would double check with the veterinarian to make sure he wanted you to use both. also, these products do not stop ticks from getting onto the pet. they prevent the tick from biting.
Shop for: tick, revolution, ivomec, advantix

Medication
Q: Is there any flea, tick & mosquito medication i can give my dog orally? she is a border colie about 52lbs.
A: Only oral med i know of is program which works only on fleas
Shop for: tick

Which is best for a tiny dog?
Q: I just aquired a 3 yr. old yorkie/llhasa mix. (girl). her owner passed away and she was left in my care. she has been very well taken care of as far as vet care and immunizations. i do think she has worms and also needs flea and tick meds. what would you reccommend for my new dog.? she only weighs about 3 lbs. very tiny. thank you, kathie kiter
A: I would use monthly interceptor or heartgard which will prevent most intestinal worms and of course heartworms. as for flea/tick meds be very careful with topical products on such a little dog as they can react, you may want to try oral program.
Shop for: tick, heartgard, interceptor

Sick dog
Q: My shitszu went next door and ate some greens and becon. she is sick and vomiting blood what can i do for her?
A: Take her to vet for exam, etc. if not possible, then you coudl try 1/2 pepcid ac once daily. fast her for 24 hours, and then only offer small amounts of water during this time. then bland diet of boiled hamburger and rice and continue pepcid but really needs vet visit

Pimple/mass
Q: My fiance and i have a 7 1/2 month old english springer spaniel. i have a habit of massaging our puppy. one day i felt what seemed to be a little pimple on his left upper chest. within one to two weeks, this little pimple grew the size of a pea or little larger, looked pinkish or reddish in color. it was also hard, nonmoveable. it felt like it was on his skin, but hard to say. we took him to the vet, which the same day, he had emergency surgery, which we are waiting for the results of the biopsy at this time. the vet informed us that if we let it go, the mass could get bigger and start to bleed, which would be hard to stop the bleeding. i am afraid it may be cancerous, even thou he seems to be doing fine....his incision is about 3 or 4 inches long. it is a pretty big size with several sutures. the vet also informed us that if it is cancer, it can spread thru his body. can this be a hemangioma? are springers accessible to tumors? cancer? can you give me a little more information? i've been searching thru all kinds of animal books we have since having 3 different types of dogs..and none on english spring spaniels. in the meantime, we're still waiting for the results which will hopefully be this week. thank you so much. linda
A: I would wait until you get biopsy back any day before i can comment or make recommendations. i can only tell you that in my experience most of these growths in young dogs are benign histiocytomas, which are very common, and actually sometimes can go down on their own. if that is what it ends up being, then you were alarmed needlessly

Tapeworms
Q: I have owned a 16 month old male sheltie for 6 months. when we first got him he had tapeworms. he has been treated and they come back after 2 months. i have given him fronline on a monthly basis (even though we are in the winter months when fleas have not been a problem). we just noticed that they are back and we must treat him again). this will be the fourth time and i would like to know if you have any suggestions. i spoke with my vets office today and they said some dogs are more into self-grooming than others and once the flea is swallowed the worms come back. i have owned shelties and collies for the past 25 years and have never encountered this problem before. i ordered my last worm treatment from you because i got two doses for the price of one from the vet. i would hate to think that this dog would have to be treated for tapeworms every 2 months for the rest of his life (i'd do it but would want to know about any health complications. please send me your advice.......in no great hurry but would like a response. thanks so much.
A: Are we sure that they are tapeworms and not other type of worms. if so, treating him periodically with droncit is fairly safe and can be repeated as needed. is highly unusual unless he is constantly being exposed to fleas. make sure you have treated house for fleas to make sure no eggs around
Shop for: droncit

Dog eating habits
Q: My dog has just recently started eating from the cats litter box an i don't know why. she is well fed but we have had no luck stopping this bad habit. is she missing something in her diet?
A: Not necessarily. many dogs love to nibble on cat feces for unknown reasons
