Coughing
Q: My 105# rottie had all shots/ kennel cough vacs. on july 10th. july 20th in the early am he started a dry, deep cough as if something was cought in his throat. he doesn't cough much. could you tell me if this sounds like kennel cough. is kennel cough airborn. he has been staying in a crate that was used by a puppy approx. 6 weeks ago
A: Kennel cough is stress induced disease caused by various viruses and bacteria some of which are normal inhabitants of dogs airways but overgrow under periods of stress. can be worsened or spread by airborne issues. also a good case example as why i am not big fan of kennel cough vaccine as i dont feel it has been shown to be effective in my opinion and in fact i think i see more kennel cough in vaccinated dogs in my experience and opinion

Hypo-thyroid
Q: Hi - i have a 13 year old red dobe - she has been on solixine .06 for quite some time now, for a thyroid condition, which if memory serves me correctly, is for a condition called "hypo-thryoid". she was recently tested again and the dosage is appropriate (60lbs). my question is, i am looking for an alternative place to purchase her medicine. the local vet seems to be making a fortune off us! (monthly dosage = $30). it seems high to me, any suggestions? -jamie
A: We have both soloxine and the generic equivalent levothyroxine in our pharmacy. please call for our price. also be aware that if you choose to go with the generic, it will probably be necessary to re-titrate your dog after a short adjustment period to be assured of proper blood levels.

Cats and frontline
Q: I just want to make sure i can use frontline on my cats as well as my dogs. is it okay?
A: You can, as long as you use frontline for cats on the cats and frontline for dogs on the dogs.
Shop for: frontline

Zentonil 200
Q: The vet placed my dog on zentonil, does pedmeds carry it or an equivelant? thank you
A: Sorry we do not stock zentonil.

Which is best for a tiny dog?
Q: I just aquired a 3 yr. old yorkie/llhasa mix. (girl). her owner passed away and she was left in my care. she has been very well taken care of as far as vet care and immunizations. i do think she has worms and also needs flea and tick meds. what would you reccommend for my new dog.? she only weighs about 3 lbs. very tiny. thank you, kathie kiter
A: I would use monthly interceptor or heartgard which will prevent most intestinal worms and of course heartworms. as for flea/tick meds be very careful with topical products on such a little dog as they can react, you may want to try oral program.
Shop for: tick, heartgard, interceptor

Pregnant dog
Q: Is it ok to give heartworm meds if it's possible that my dog is pregnant
A: Heartgard and iverhart(the generic equivalent) are safe to use on pregnant dogs.
Shop for: heartgard

Eye is swollen from scratching.
Q: What kind of medicine can i get for my dog eyes. they always have cold in them no matter how much i clean them. he scatch his eye from trying to get the the cold out.
A: Take him to vet for complete exam and workup. he could have allergies causing this or a primary eye problem. in meantime you could try benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound of body weight up to twice daily to see if helps with itching

Sick puppy
Q: I have a 8 month old, 3 lb chihuahua that has been sick since yesterday. she was administered with once a month wormer and squeeze on flea control. the flea control was (unknowingly at the time) for dogs over 33 pounds. we bathed the dog after about 1/2 hour.but she will not eat, drink, and just lies around.she had a very wet, somewhat hard bowel movement lastnight with a trace of blood in it.she has also vomited whenever she drinks water and it looks like human spit. she also gags, and you can hear her stomach gurgling, and she acts like her stomach is sore. she is also running a little fever. i do not have the money to take her to the vet, but i don't want her to die either. do you have any suggestions as to what may be wrong with my little doggie? thank you very much for any help you may give.
A: You need to bring her to a veterinarian or veterinary emergency room immediately.
